Ways to prevent power surges this storm season
Wednesday, 7th November, 2018
Power surges during the storm season can be damaging to your ducted air conditioning system and other electrical appliances in your home. This can often lead to expensive visits from electricians and the replacement of damaged household items. Power surges are caused by lightening strikes and can happen anywhere, so of course, it is best to be prepared for the worst, especially if it can save you in the long run.
Switchboard Protection
The most common way to protect your home from a power surge is a switchboard with surge protecting capabilities that can cut off the electrical connection automatically with the threat of a power surge.
What isn’t widely known, however, is that these surge protector power boards are quite expensive and generally can’t protect everything within your home. To achieve total coverage you would have to install a surge protecting power board on every power point in the home which comes with a hefty price tag.
What is the alternative?
Surge protection for an entire house is easily achievable by installing a surge protection device straight into the power board itself.
This means that whenever a power surge is detected, anything in your home that is plugged in to a power point will be safe because the surge is blocked at the point where power enters your home, as opposed to the point immediately before the power point in your living room.
